For council: strong, independent thinkers. Enquirer endorsements for Cincinnati City Council
It is fortunate that this fall’s slate of candidates for Cincinnati City Council is one of the strongest in recent years. Given the city’s current economic and political climate, it is important that the next council is filled with strong, able, independent-minded thinkers who are secure enough to listen to other points of view, work together for the city’s best interests, forge creative solutions that work for everybody, and not give in to pressure or threats.

Those criteria have guided our endorsements, but our choices do not reflect a lack of esteem for other candidates, including incumbents we have chosen not to endorse. Many would serve the city well – we would particularly cite incumbents Greg Harris, Laketa Cole and Chris Monzel, and challengers Tony Fischer, Anitra Brockman and George Zamary – so this was a very tough call. Our choices include three Democrats, three Republicans and three Charterites:
Jeff Berding (D) – An incumbent who has emerged as a strong, principled presence, showing independence and courage in proposing solutions and working with colleagues, despite party and union pressure. We hope he finishes high in the vote order and sends a message to those who would squash dissent.
