Port Authority to get $160M in funds for economic development

A majority of Cincinnati City Council members have signaled their support for a proposal to provide $160 million to the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority so it can act as the city’s “exclusive authorized agent” for economic development.

Cincy Council majority has funding plan for Go Cincinnati

A Cincinnati Council majority is supporting a proposal to let the Port Authority implement and manage the “Go Cincinnati” plan.

A group developed it a couple years ago as an economic development road map for the city. But there’s never been any money to make it happen.

Five Council Members want to dedicate half of the tax money the city will receive from the Downtown casino to “Go Cincinnati.”

Council Member Jeff Berding says it’s time to take action.

Council members to push for Port funding

A plan to attract and grow jobs in Cincinnati would be headed by an expanded Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and funded in large part by revenues from the planned casino at Broadway Commons, under a proposal unveiled Monday.

Under the plan, a redesigned port authority would contract with the city and be the top catalytic corporation charged with implementing the Go Cincinnati plan, creating jobs and fueling private investment in the city.

Kids Before Politics

I was proud to hear Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) recently became the first large city school district in Ohio to achieve the state rating “effective.” This is good news. But much more has to be accomplished to ensure every child receives a high-quality education. To continue making progress, CPS must focus on the one thing that matters most: improving student achievement.

Politicians Line Up Behind Jeff Berding

Councilman Draws Big Name Support On Saturday

CINCINNATI -- More local politicians are gathering to support Councilman Jeff Berding.

Rep. Steve Driehaus voiced his support for Berding on Saturday.

Berding is up for re-election this November for City Council.

Among the other people throwing their support behind Berding on Saturday were Hamilton County commissioners Todd Portune and David Pepper, state Sen. Eric Kearney and state Rep. Tyrone Yates.

For council: strong, independent thinkers. Enquirer endorsements for Cincinnati City Council

Jeff Berding (D) – An incumbent who has emerged as a strong, principled presence, showing independence and courage in proposing solutions and working with colleagues, despite party and union pressure. We hope he finishes high in the vote order and sends a message to those who would squash dissent.

City Unions Release List Of Endorsements

CINCINNATI -- Unions representing Cincinnati police and city managers released their lists of who they want you to vote for this November.

Mayor Mark Mallory does not have the support of the Fraternal Order of Police or CODE, which stands for Cincinnati Organized and Dedicated Employees.

The unions also said they'll campaign against the four council members who sided with the mayor, asking for furloughs from police and other city workers.

With a projected $51 million deficit for 2010, the unions say the budget as well as concessions will continue to an issue.

Jeff Receives Perfect Score from Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber

Councilmember Jeff Berding was one of only two candidates to receive a perfect score from the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber.

Opinion: City Council math: 9 - 4 = Dysfunction

Cincinnati voters may assume that city policy is crafted by the mayor and the nine members of City Council they elect.

Unfortunately, they're only a little more than half-right. During 2009, Cincinnati in effect has had a five -member council on decisions that really matter.

Councilman Wants Pledge To Hedge Against Higher Taxes

Berding Says Tax Hike Possible After Election

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati's budget crisis has been painful, but that hasn't stopped one City Councilman from promising not to raise taxes.

Jeff Berding said his stance reflects the widely held suspicion that city officials intend to push for higher taxes once November's election is over.

"They may not want to come out and say it publicly, but privately there's been a lot of talk about raising taxes," said Berding, who is seeking re-election.
